Press Pass Mentors is an 18-month mentoring program for low-income students at public and charter schools in Washington D.C., who aspire to attend college. Students enter our program early in their junior year and stay with us through high school graduation.

Iyanna Armwood

THURGOOD MARSHALL ACADEMY

Iyanna is enrolled in challenging AP classes and also serves as secretary of the “Happy Black Girls” club at her school, befriending, encouraging and providing an important support network for other TMA students. She loves writing and counts Sarah Dessen as her favorite author. “She’s very, very driven,” one of her teachers says. “She’s very focused.”

Johanna Ayala

Johanna competes for her school’s basketball and volleyball teams. She also loves dancing, particularly Latin dancing. In the classroom she enjoys math and science.

Darrius Cook

Darrius has a wide range of interests and plays both the drums and the saxophone. Fun and outgoing, he also enjoys football and is thinking someday he might want to study electrical engineering or computer science.

Brendan Epton

Brendan is a leader both inside and outside the courtroom. He runs cross-country for his school, but also enjoys boxing, basketball and football. He enjoys creative writing, learning about civil rights issues and might someday study law.

Darrell Foster

Darrell has a full load of challenging advanced-placement courses but still finds time for lacrosse and football. He loves science and hopes to study someday to become a veterinarian.

Briana enjoys both literature and history. She’s also adept at creative writing, especially poetry and short stories. She would love to someday travel the world.

Danielle McLarty

Danielle is trained in four types of dance and loves the way movement allows someone to express themselves. She also enjoys sports and hopes to someday become the first female general manager in the NBA.

Franchesca Morris

Originally from Jamaica, Franchesca hopes to someday be a lawyer. One of her teachers says she’s "the hardest working kid I've ever taught." Franchesca is involved in student government and serves as treasurer for the junior class. She also attended a summer camp at Princeton prior to her junior year.

Deshawne Noble

A former teacher describes her as “very personable and very determined,” DeShawne has taken on challenging classes at school. She enjoys writing and when she’s not studying, she can be found reading Sarah Dessen books or playing video games.

Joi West

KIPP DC: COLLEGE PREP

A leader in the classroom and a helper outside of it, Joi aims high and would like to be a neurosurgeon someday. She’s a gifted writer and strong communicator. “She’s nothing short of awesome,” says one of her former teachers.
